What is a smart vape, and should you get one?

Smart vapes

Screens, puff counters, Bluetooth, auto coil detection and adjustable power have trickled down from big box mods into pocket pod kits. This guide explains what each feature does, which real devices have it, and which extras are worth paying for.

Smart vape device with a digital display

Only got a minute?
  • “Smart vape” is a marketing label, not a category. It covers anything from a pod kit with a battery-level screen to a 200W mod with a touchscreen and Bluetooth.
  • The genuinely useful features are a screen, auto coil detection and a puff counter. They stop guesswork, burnt coils and surprise flat batteries.
  • Bluetooth, apps and speakers are extras. They add little to the vape itself, they are rarely used after the first week, and they cost battery life.
  • Real examples on the shelf: the Crystal Prime M3 Smart pod kit, the IVG Smart Max big-puff kit, the Oxva Xlim Pro 2, the Voopoo Drag E60 and the Geekvape T200 Aegis Touch, from pocket pods to full touchscreen mods.
  • Should you get one? If you have ever burnt a coil, run out of battery unexpectedly or wondered how much you vape, yes. If you want the simplest possible device, a plain pod kit still does the job.

How “smart” is defined on a vape

A basic pod kit has a battery, a coil and a button or draw sensor. Press, inhale, done. A smart vape adds a chipset that can measure things and show them to you, and in some cases change its own behaviour based on what it measures. That is the whole idea. The label gets stuck on a wide range of devices, so it helps to break it into the individual features and ask what each one does for you.

Screen
From a simple LED battery bar to a full-colour OLED or touchscreen. Shows battery, wattage, coil resistance and sometimes puff count and liquid level.
Auto coil detection
The chip reads the resistance of the pod or coil you fit and sets a safe power level itself. Usually called Smart Mode.
Puff counter
Counts draws, usually per session or since the last reset. Common on big-puff kits, where it doubles as a rough gauge of how much liquid is left.
Adjustable power
Variable wattage or voltage, or simple Eco and Boost modes. Lets you trade flavour and warmth against battery and coil life.
Bluetooth and apps
Pairs the device to your phone for usage stats and settings, and on some kits a microphone and speaker for calls.
Protections
Short-circuit, overcharge, overheat and over-time cut-offs. Not glamorous, but the chipset that runs the screen is also the one that runs these.

Real smart vapes you can buy today

These five run from the simplest to the most capable, and every one of them is a rechargeable, refillable or re-poddable device, which is what the law has required since single-use disposables were banned on 1 June 2025.

Crystal Prime M3 Smart Refillable Pod Kit

The one people usually mean when they say “smart vape”. It is a slim, inhale-activated pod kit with a colour LED touchscreen, Bluetooth and a built-in microphone and speaker. Underneath the extras it is a sensible refillable: a 2ml pod with a built-in mesh coil in 0.6Ω or 0.8Ω, dual voltage settings and Type-C charging. It suits someone moving on from single-use devices who wants a screen and a refillable pod in one slim body.

Built-in battery, 2ml refillable pod, 0.6Ω or 0.8Ω mesh, dual voltage, touchscreen, Bluetooth, 50/50 liquid.

IVG Smart Max Prefilled Pod Kit

A big-puff kit rather than a refillable. You get a 1000mAh rechargeable body, an LED display for battery level, Eco and Boost output modes, and replaceable prefilled 2ml pods in 10mg or 20mg nic salt. The kit is rated at 10,000 puffs. Draw-activated, no buttons to learn. The screen and two power modes are the “smart” part.

1000mAh, Type-C, LED battery display, Eco and Boost modes, prefilled 2ml pods, 10mg or 20mg, rated 10,000 puffs.

Oxva Xlim Pro 2 Pod Kit

The grown-up option for someone who wants smart features with a small screen showing battery and power rather than a touchscreen. A 1300mAh battery drives 5W to 30W, and you choose between Smart Mode, which reads the pod’s resistance and sets the power for you, and Variable Wattage for manual control. Two pods in the box, 0.6Ω for a restricted direct-lung draw and 0.8Ω for mouth-to-lung, a side airflow slider, and both draw and button activation. It takes the Xlim V2, V3 and EZ pods, so replacement pods are easy to find.

1300mAh, 5-30W, Smart and VW modes, 2ml pods, 0.6Ω and 0.8Ω mesh included, adjustable airflow, Type-C.

Voopoo Drag E60 Pod Kit

Where pod kit meets mod. The Drag E60 has a 2550mAh battery, up to 60W, an OLED screen with two adjustment buttons, and Voopoo’s GENE.TT 2.0 chip offering Smart, RBA and ECO modes with coil detection. It uses the PnP coil range, with a 0.2Ω and a 0.3Ω in the box, and carries the full set of protections: over-current, overcharge, short-circuit, overheat, over-time and low battery. It suits a vaper who wants a proper screen, real power and a warmer draw but does not want to carry loose batteries.

2550mAh, 5-60W, OLED screen, Smart/RBA/ECO modes, coil detection, PnP coils, Type-C.

Geekvape T200 Aegis Touch Kit

The top of the tree. A 2.4-inch full touchscreen on a dual-18650, 200W Aegis mod with Geekvape’s AS Chip 3.0, power, temperature control and bypass modes, and the tri-proof water, dust and shock resistance the range is known for. It comes with the Zeus sub-ohm tank and two sub-ohm mesh coils. This is a device for an experienced direct-to-lung vaper who already understands wattage and coil ranges; batteries are not included, so factor those in and read up on 18650 battery safety before you buy cells.

Dual 18650 (not included), up to 200W, 2.4-inch touchscreen, power/TC/bypass, Zeus tank, two sub-ohm mesh coils, Type-C.

Which features are worth paying for

Ranked by how much difference each one makes to the everyday vape, once the novelty has worn off.

  1. 1
Auto coil detection (Smart Mode). Worth it for almost everyone. Running a 0.8Ω pod at the wattage meant for 0.6Ω is an easy way to burn a coil, and this feature makes that mistake impossible. If you have ever wondered why a new pod tasted burnt on day one, read how to fill a pod kit correctly; the other half of the answer is power.
  2. 2
A battery readout. Even a three-bar LED beats a single light that only turns red when it is already too late. On a prefilled kit a battery display is the difference between topping up at lunch and being caught out at 9pm.
  3. 3
Adjustable power. Worth it if you switch between liquids or pods. A 50/50 nic salt at 20mg wants low power and a tight draw; a 3mg shortfill in a 0.3Ω coil wants the opposite. Two modes, like the IVG Smart Max’s Eco and Boost, cover most people. A full wattage range is for tinkerers. Our MTL vs DTL guide explains which end you belong at.
  4. 4
A puff counter. Useful on big-puff kits as a rough fuel gauge for the pod, and useful for anyone trying to keep track of how much they vape. Less useful on a refillable, where you can just look at the pod.
  5. 5
Bluetooth, apps, speakers. None of these improve the vape itself. They drain the battery, the apps tend to be abandoned by manufacturers after a year or two, and a phone already does all of it better. If a device is priced higher mainly for these, spend the difference on a second pod and a bottle of liquid instead.

What the screen cannot tell you

A readout is only as good as the sensor behind it, and there are three things no pod kit screen measures. The first is liquid level in a refillable pod. The chip knows resistance and battery voltage, not how much liquid is left, so a “liquid level” icon is either an estimate from puff count or not there at all. Look at the pod with your eyes before a long day out. The second is coil wear. A coil that has darkened and lost flavour still reads the same resistance, so Smart Mode will happily keep firing it at full power. A pod coil is typically changed every one to three weeks whatever the display says, and our common vape problems guide covers the burnt-taste and weak-vapour signs to watch for. The third is the state of the battery cell itself. A percentage figure tells you charge, not health, and a cell that drops from 60% to 20% in an hour is telling you something the number on the screen is not.

Charging is the other place where a screen invites over-confidence. Use the USB-C cable supplied with the kit, plugged into a standard low-output USB plug or a computer port, and avoid fast-charge bricks, which can push more current than a small kit is designed for. Do not charge unattended overnight because the display says it will be full in an hour. A puff counter, a battery bar and a coil readout are useful habits, not a substitute for them.

Who a smart vape suits, and who should skip it

Get one if
You are moving from disposables to a prefilled pod kit and want to know when to charge. You keep burning coils. You swap between pods or liquids. You like knowing your numbers.
Skip it if
You want the smallest, lightest, cheapest thing that works. A plain pod kit such as the Vaporesso Xros 4 Mini or an Innokin Endura does everything a beginner needs with one button or none.

There is also a middle path. Plenty of ordinary pod kits from Vaporesso, Oxva and Innokin include a battery indicator and a sensibly matched fixed power output without calling themselves smart. Our best pod kits for beginners guide and the wider best vape kits in the UK round-up both lean that way. If you are weighing a screen-equipped pod against a full mod, pod systems vs box mods is the comparison to read.

One cost note that applies to every device here: the Vaping Products Duty from 1 October 2026 is charged on liquid, not hardware. A refillable smart kit that runs on 10ml bottles or shortfills gives you more control over that ongoing cost than a prefilled one, whatever the screen says.

Quick answers

What is a smart vape?

Any vape with a chipset that measures and displays things: battery level, coil resistance, wattage, puff count. Some add automatic power setting, Bluetooth or a touchscreen. It is a marketing term rather than a fixed category.

Do smart vapes need an app?

No. Every device on this page works fully without a phone. Bluetooth and apps are optional extras on a small number of kits, such as the Crystal Prime M3.

Does a screen use much battery?

A small LED or OLED that lights up on a draw uses very little. A full-colour touchscreen with Bluetooth switched on uses noticeably more, which is one reason the simpler kits last longer between charges for the same battery size.

Are smart vapes legal in the UK?

Yes, provided they are rechargeable and refillable or re-poddable, pods and tanks hold no more than 2ml of nicotine liquid, and the liquid is no stronger than 20mg/ml. All of the devices here meet those rules. Single-use disposables have been banned since 1 June 2025.

Is a smart vape good for a beginner?

A pod kit with auto coil detection and a battery indicator is a very good beginner choice. A 200W touchscreen mod is not; start with a pod and move up if you want to.

Can I use any e-liquid in a smart pod kit?

Match the liquid to the coil, not to the screen. Pods at 0.6Ω and above want 50/50 10ml liquids and nic salts; sub-ohm coils below 0.6Ω want 70/30 shortfills. Smart Mode sets the power, but it cannot fix the wrong liquid.
