Why a refillable pod kit is the right first kit
Single-use disposable vapes have been banned in the UK since 1 June 2025. Your two legal replacements are a prefilled pod kit, where you clip in a sealed pod and throw it away when it’s empty, or a refillable pod kit, where you fill a small pod from a 10ml bottle yourself.
Both are easy. The difference is money and choice. A refillable kit costs more on day one and then almost nothing to run: a 10ml bottle of nic salt holds five fills of a 2ml pod, and one pod usually lasts a week or two before the flavour fades. The cost advantage gets bigger from 1 October 2026, when the Vaping Products Duty adds £2.20 plus VAT to every 10ml of liquid whether it comes in a bottle or sealed inside a pod. The less liquid you waste, the less tax you pay, and a refillable pod wastes none.
Prefilled pod kit
Closest thing to a disposable. Sealed pods, one flavour per pod, nothing to fill. Easiest possible switch, but you pay for the pod every time and you’re limited to that brand’s flavours.
Refillable pod kit
Fill the pod yourself from any 10ml bottle. Hundreds of flavours, any strength up to 20mg, lowest cost per ml. Needs about thirty seconds of your time once every day or two.

What makes a pod kit easy to live with
Beginners don’t fall out with pod kits over flavour. They fall out with them because the pod leaks in a pocket, the battery dies at 4pm, or the fill hole is fiddly. So these are the things we looked for.
Draw activation. No fire button, no five-click lock. You puff and it works, the same as the disposable you’re used to. Every kit below is inhale-activated.
A sensible battery. A 250mAh cell is fine for a light vaper who charges nightly. If you got through a 600-puff disposable in a day, you want 1000mAh or more so the kit sees you through to bedtime. USB-C matters too: some kits don’t include a cable, and a phone cable does the job.

Two things to know before you buy: it charges by micro USB rather than USB-C, so keep the cable, and the pod is filled with the squeeze bottle supplied in the box rather than through a top or side bung, which takes a little more care. What to fill it with
This is where most beginners go wrong, and it isn’t the kit’s fault. Pod coils in the 0.6Ω to 1.2Ω range want a thin 50/50 liquid. That’s what every 10ml bottle on the site is. Thick 70/30 shortfills are for sub-ohm tanks and will burn a pod coil in days.
Coming from a disposable? Buy 20mg nic salts in the flavour you already like. A 20mg salt in a 0.8Ω pod feels almost identical to a 20mg disposable, because that’s exactly what was inside the disposable. Most of the big disposable brands now sell their flavours in 10ml bottles, so you can usually match the exact one.
Coming from cigarettes? 20mg salt for a pack-a-day smoker, 10mg for ten a day or fewer. Salts hit the bloodstream fast and don’t scratch the throat the way freebase nicotine does at high strength, which is why they suit low-power pod kits. On a lower-resistance pod like the 0.6Ω in the Xros 5 Mini or the 0.4Ω Xlim pod, drop to 10mg. More vapour per puff means more nicotine per puff, and 20mg through a 0.4Ω will make you light-headed.

How to fill and prime a new pod
Every kit here fills the same way. The one step people skip, the wait, is the one that matters.

Pull the pod off and find the bung. It’s a rubber plug on the top or side of the pod. Lift it with a fingernail; don’t try to fill through the mouthpiece or the air hole.

Fill to just below the line. Squeeze slowly and stop with a gap of air at the top. Overfilling forces liquid into the airflow and is the number one cause of a gurgling, spitting pod.

Close the bung and wait five minutes. On a brand new pod the cotton is dry. Puffing before it’s soaked through scorches the cotton, and a scorched pod never tastes right again.

Click it in and take a gentle first puff. Draw slowly for two or three seconds, as you would on a cigarette. Hard, fast pulls flood the coil.

Top up before it’s empty. Refill when the liquid drops to about a quarter, so the cotton around the coil is never exposed. A pod that runs dry burns.

Keeping the pod alive: four habits
These are the habits that stretch a pod from a few days to a few weeks. And keep it on 50/50 liquid: a thick shortfill is the fastest way to kill a pod coil.
Don’t chain puff
Five quick puffs in a row heats the coil faster than the cotton can re-wet. Leave twenty or thirty seconds between draws and the burnt taste never arrives.
Keep it upright
Stored on its side overnight, liquid creeps into the airflow and you get a wet pocket. Stand it up, or lay it mouthpiece-up.
Wipe the contacts
Once a week, pull the pod and dry the metal contacts and the well underneath with tissue or a cotton bud. Condensation there is why kits “stop firing”.
Swap the pod when flavour drops
A muted, slightly sweet-burnt taste means the mesh is caked. Rinsing doesn’t fix it. Swap the pod; keep two spares in the drawer so you never nurse a dead one.
