1. Fill your tank correctly
Improper filling is one of the most common causes of tank leakage. Most vape tanks have a central tube that connects the coil to the mouthpiece, as well as airflow channels where leakage often occurs. To avoid spilling e-liquid:
- Keep liquid out of the central tube and airflow channels. Tilt your tank to the side while filling, letting the liquid slide down the inner wall of the tank, much like pouring a drink into a glass.
- Avoid overfilling. Leaving a small pocket of air in the tank creates a vacuum, which helps hold the e-liquid in place.
- Check the coil is secure. If your tank has a coil securing ring, ensure you’re not loosening it when unscrewing the top fill section.
If you accidentally get e-liquid in the central tube, you can:
- Blow gently into a tissue placed at the tank’s bottom.
- Flick the tank (mouthpiece down) into a tissue to clear excess liquid.
2. Tighten everything carefully

- Avoid cross-threading. Align threads carefully before screwing components together. Start by turning anti-clockwise until you hear a click, then screw clockwise.

3. Keep your tank upright
When not in use, always leave your vape tank standing upright. This is especially important when the tank is less than half full, as uncovered juice holes can lead to leaks. Standing your tank upright ensures the e-liquid stays where it should.
4. Use the correct coil for your e-liquid
Choosing the right coil for your e-liquid can significantly reduce leaking. Here’s a quick guide:
- High-resistance coils (1 ohm or above): Best for thinner, PG-based liquids. Thicker VG liquids may clog these coils.
- Low-resistance coils (below 0.6 ohms): Ideal for thicker, VG-based liquids. Using thin PG liquids with these coils can lead to flooding and leaks.
Using an inappropriate coil can lead to e-liquid pooling in the central tube or airflow channels, so always check compatibility.

7. Refine your inhalation technique
If you’re new to vaping, your inhalation style might be contributing to leaks. Unlike cigarettes, e-cigarettes require slow, steady draws rather than sharp puffs. Fast inhaling can pull excess liquid into the coil housing, leading to flooding and leaks. Instead:
- Take longer, gentler puffs.
- Avoid sucking sharply, as this can draw liquid into the central tube.
8. Minimise condensation
Even with a perfectly functioning tank, condensation can cause minor leaking. Vapour left in the centre tube or mouthpiece can condense and collect over time. To minimise this:
- Start inhaling as soon as you press the fire button.
- Release the fire button just before finishing your puff.
- Clear condensation by removing the tank, wrapping tissue around the airflow holes and blowing gently through the mouthpiece.
9. Empty your tank before flights
Changes in air pressure during flights (or even on chair lifts in mountainous areas) can cause tanks to leak. Empty your tank before travelling and refill it once you’ve landed.
