Adjustable airflow vs fixed draw: which is best for you?

- Airflow is how much air mixes with the vapour. Less air means a tighter, warmer, more flavoursome draw. More air means a cooler, looser draw with bigger clouds.
- Adjustable airflow is a slider, ring or dial you set yourself. Fixed draw is set at the factory and cannot be changed.
- Prefilled pod kits are almost all fixed draw, tuned for a tight mouth-to-lung pull with 20mg nic salt. That is why they feel so consistent.
- Refillable pod kits and mods are mostly adjustable, so one device can cover a cigarette-like draw and a looser one, and can be matched to different coils.
- If you have never adjusted anything and you are happy, stay fixed. If your draw feels too tight, too loose or too hot, adjustable is the fix.
How airflow changes the vape
When you inhale on a vape, air is pulled through one or more holes in the pod or tank, across the hot coil, and up the chimney to your mouth. The size of those holes decides how much air comes along for the ride, and that one variable changes three things at once.
Flavour
Less air means the vapour is more concentrated when it reaches your tongue. Closing the airflow down is the quickest way to sharpen a flavour that tastes thin.
Warmth
Air cools the coil and the vapour. A restricted draw runs warmer; an open draw runs cooler. If a coil feels hot on the lips, open the airflow before turning the wattage down.
Vapour
More air carries more vapour out of the tank. Cloud size is mostly a function of coil power plus open airflow. Restricted airflow keeps clouds small and discreet.
There is a fourth effect that is easy to miss: throat hit. A tight draw with high nicotine gives a firm hit at the back of the throat, close to a cigarette. An open draw spreads the same nicotine across more air and feels smoother. That is why 20mg nic salt feels right in a restricted pod and harsh in an open sub-ohm tank, and why 3mg feels right in the tank and pointless in the pod. Adjustable airflow: what it is and how it works
An adjustable device gives you a physical control over the air intake. On a pod kit it is usually a small slider or a dial on the side of the battery; on a tank it is a rotating collar at the base with a row of slots that you open or close. Slide it shut and the draw tightens until it feels like pulling on a cigarette. Slide it open and the resistance drops away until you can breathe the vapour straight into your lungs.
The point is not that one setting is right. It is that the same device can be tuned to the coil you are using, the liquid you are running and how you feel that day. A 0.8Ω coil at half-open airflow, a 0.6Ω coil at three-quarters, a 1.2Ω coil nearly closed: one kit, three quite different vapes.
Where you find it. Nearly every mid-range refillable pod kit now has it. The catch. You have to learn it. New users often leave the airflow wherever it came out of the box, then blame the coil or the liquid when the draw is not right. The first thing to do with any adjustable kit is run it fully closed, then fully open, then settle somewhere between. It takes two minutes and it changes everything.
Fixed draw: what it is and why it exists
A fixed-draw device has airflow holes of a set size and no way to change them. The manufacturer decided what the draw should feel like, tested it against the coil and liquid the device ships with, and locked it in. Every puff is the same as the last one, and every unit of that model feels the same as every other.
Where you find it. Prefilled pod kits. The Lost Mary BM6000, Elf Bar AF5000, IVG 2400 (see our IVG 2400 review) and Vuse Pro are all fixed draw, tuned for a tight mouth-to-lung pull on a 2ml pod of 20mg nic salt. (The AF5000 is the exception on filling: it ships with a 2ml pod and a separate 10ml refill bottle, filled by its pump system, but the draw is still fixed.) That is exactly what the old single-use bars did before the ban on 1 June 2025, and it is why ex-disposable users take to a prefilled pod kit without noticing a change. The catch. If the draw does not suit you, there is nothing to be done except buy a different device. Fixed draw also means fixed to one style: a prefilled kit will never give you a direct-to-lung vape, and it cannot adapt if your preference shifts over time.

How airflow lines up with MTL and DTL
Airflow hardware and inhale style are two different questions, but they are joined at the hip. Your inhale style is what you do with your mouth and lungs; the airflow is what the device lets you do. Get them matched and the vape feels right. Get them crossed and it feels wrong in a way that is hard to name.
Mouth-to-lung (MTL) is the cigarette draw: pull vapour into your mouth, then breathe it down. It wants restricted airflow, a coil of 0.6Ω or above (typically 0.6Ω to 1.2Ω), 50/50 liquid and, for moderate to heavy habits, 10mg to 20mg nic salt. On an adjustable kit, run the airflow between closed and a third open.
Direct-to-lung (DTL) is a deep breath straight into the lungs. It wants open airflow, a sub-ohm coil below about 0.6Ω, thick 70/30 shortfill liquid and 3mg to 6mg nicotine. This is only possible on an adjustable device with the airflow most of the way open.
Restricted direct-to-lung (RDL) sits in between and is where a lot of adjustable pod kits are happiest: a 0.6Ω coil, airflow about half open, a slightly looser draw than a cigarette but not a lung-full. How to dial in adjustable airflow

Start closed. Slide the airflow fully shut and take a puff. This is the tightest, warmest, most flavoursome the device gets. If it feels like sucking through a straw, that is expected.

Open it a notch at a time. Take a puff at each position. Notice where the flavour starts to thin and where the warmth drops. Your sweet spot is usually just before the flavour goes.

Match it to the coil. A lower resistance coil needs more air to keep it cool. If you swap from a 1.0Ω to a 0.6Ω coil, open the airflow up before you fire it.

Close it slightly for a full tank. A freshly filled pod at wide-open airflow is the classic leak recipe. Nudge it a notch tighter for the first few puffs, then reopen.

Which suits who
Choose fixed draw if
You have just moved on from disposables, you want the same puff every time and you do not want to think about settings. A prefilled pod kit or a simple starter kit is the right buy.
Choose adjustable if
Your current draw is too tight, too airy or too hot, you use more than one coil resistance or liquid, or you fancy trying a looser draw without buying a second device. Most refillable pod kits and every mod qualify.
The honest answer for most people is that the choice makes itself through the format you are drawn to, because the two questions are bundled together by the manufacturers. Does closing the airflow improve flavour?
Usually, yes. Less air means more concentrated vapour and a warmer draw, both of which read as stronger flavour. Close it too far and the vapour gets hot and the draw becomes hard work, so back off a notch from fully shut.
Are prefilled pod kits adjustable?
Almost none are. A few newer big-puff kits add a two-position switch between a tighter and looser draw, but there is no fine control.
Can I vape DTL on a fixed-draw device?
No. Fixed-draw pods are built with small air holes for a mouth-to-lung pull. A direct-lung inhale needs the wide-open airflow only an adjustable pod mod or tank can give.
Why does my pod leak when the airflow is open?
Wide-open airflow drops the pressure inside the pod, so liquid pushes through the coil more easily, especially when the pod is full. Close it a little after each refill and avoid leaving the device on its side.
Does adjustable airflow use more e-liquid?
The airflow itself does not, but the open settings pair with lower-resistance coils and longer inhales, and those get through liquid much faster. A tight MTL setting on a 1.2Ω coil is the most economical way to vape.
