- Most burnt hits come from three things. A coil that has not soaked, liquid that is too thick for it, or power set too high.
- Prefilled pods remove all three. Each pod comes with its own coil and liquid chosen for it, on a device with fixed power.
- A new pod means a new coil. The coil is replaced every time you change the pod, so it never outlives the liquid it was matched to.
- You can still burn one. Chain vaping, very long draws and running a pod bone dry will scorch any coil.
- Our picks: Lost Mary BM6000, Lost Mary 4 in 1, IVG Smart Max, Vuse Pro and Elf Bar Elfa.
Why coils burn in the first place
A coil is a small heating element wrapped in cotton. When you draw, the element heats the liquid soaked into the cotton and turns it into vapour. As long as the cotton stays wet, you taste flavour. The moment it runs dry, the element heats the cotton itself and you get that harsh, burnt hit. Our guide to how vape coils work explains the science in more detail.
On a refillable kit, all three are your job: priming, choosing the liquid and setting the power. Sweet, heavily flavoured liquids also leave residue on the coil that shortens its life. If you are on a refillable and keep burning coils, work through why coils burn out fast first; the fix is often a habit, not a new kit.
How prefilled pods take the guesswork out
A prefilled pod kit works differently. You click a sealed, ready-to-use pod onto a rechargeable battery, vape it, and replace it when it is done. There is no filling, no liquid to choose and no wattage to set. That removes the three biggest causes of burnt coils in one go.
The coil and the liquid are matched. The manufacturer picks the coil resistance and fills it with a liquid made for it, usually 50/50 nic salt. You cannot put a thick high-VG liquid into a tight coil by mistake.
The power is fixed. The battery delivers the output the coil was designed for. Some kits offer an Eco mode or two settings, but none let you push the coil beyond its limits.
Every pod brings a new coil. This is the big one. On a refillable pod you might use the same coil for one to three weeks. On a prefilled pod the coil is replaced every time you change the pod, so you are never drawing on a coil that has been slowly caked in residue. Five prefilled pod kits worth buying
Every kit here is on sale at E-Cig Clouds and uses a mesh coil, which heats evenly across its surface and is less prone to hot spots than a single wire. Our guide to mesh vs regular coils explains why that matters for flavour.
Lost Mary BM6000
A strong all-rounder for daily vapers who want to change pods as rarely as possible. It uses a QUAQ mesh coil and 50/50 nic salt, has an LED battery indicator and a clear window so you can see the liquid level, which helps you change the pod before it runs dry.
Lost Mary 4 in 1 Eco 3200
Four prefilled 2ml pods on one battery, each with its own 1.2Ω mesh coil, and you twist to change flavour. Rotating between pods spreads your puffs across four coils, and Eco Mode keeps the output gentle. The OLED screen shows battery and mode.
IVG Smart Max
The highest rating in this list, with a mesh coil and two output modes. Eco mode is the one to use if you are prone to burnt hits, because it is the gentler setting. The LED display shows battery level.
Vuse Pro
A slim, splash-resistant MTL device with a mesh coil design and magnetic USB charging. Pods are sold separately in packs of two, and each needs a short activation step before first use, which is the best defence against a dry first puff.
Elf Bar Elfa
A light, pen-style kit using QUAQ mesh coil pods and 20mg nic salt, with the battery available in several colours. The small rating means you change pods, and coils, often, so the flavour stays fresh. The Elfa’s own pods are prefilled; empty refillable pods that fit the Elfa battery are also sold if you later want to fill your own.

The five kits compared
| Kit | Rated puffs | Pods | Battery | Strengths | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lost Mary BM6000 | 6,000 | One prefilled 2ml | 1000mAh | 0, 10, 20mg | Fewer pod changes |
| Lost Mary 4 in 1 | 3,200 (Eco) | Four prefilled 2ml | 850mAh | 20mg | Flavour variety |
| IVG Smart Max | 10,000 | One prefilled 2ml | 1000mAh | 10, 20mg | Highest rating |
| Vuse Pro | No kit rating | Prefilled 2ml | 370mAh | 12, 18mg | Slim, lower strengths |
| Elf Bar Elfa | About 600 | Prefilled 2ml | 500mAh | 20mg | Frequent fresh coils |
Our overall pick for avoiding burnt hits is the Lost Mary BM6000: a matched mesh coil, a big battery, a liquid window so you are never surprised by an empty pod, and a choice of 0mg, 10mg or 20mg replacement pods.

Habits that stop a burnt taste on any prefilled pod
A prefilled pod removes most of the risk, but not all of it. These five habits deal with the rest.
- 1
Follow the activation step. Some pods, such as Vuse Pro, have a seal to push before use and a short wait. Skip it and the first puffs can be dry.
- 2
Space your puffs. Chain vaping keeps the coil hot and gives the cotton no time to rewet. Leave a few seconds between draws.
- 3
Keep draws steady, not endless. A very long draw can outpace the wick on any small coil. Two to four seconds is plenty on an MTL pod.
- 4
Use the gentler mode if you have one. Eco settings on kits like the IVG Smart Max and Lost Mary 4 in 1 are kinder to the coil.
- 5
Change the pod at the first burnt hit. A burnt taste on a prefilled pod means it is finished. Drawing on will not bring the flavour back.
Heat matters too. A pod left in a hot car or on a radiator can taste off, and a very cold one may wick slowly on the first puffs. If you are not sure whether a pod is finished or just needs a rest, our guide on when to change a pod or coil covers the signs, and why a vape tastes burnt looks at burnt tastes in more depth.
If you do stay on a refillable kit, fresh replacement coils are the simplest fix for a burnt taste that will not go away.
Cost and the new vape duty
From 1 October 2026, Vaping Products Duty applies to all vaping liquid at £2.20 per 10ml, or £2.64 with VAT. It is charged at the same rate per ml whether the liquid is in a prefilled pod or a bottle, so it does not change which format is cheaper for you. Pre-duty stock is on sale until 31 March 2027. Quick answers
Less often, because the coil and liquid are matched and the power is fixed. You can still scorch one by chain vaping or running the pod completely dry.
Usually the activation step was skipped or the first puffs were taken too quickly. Follow the pod instructions and start with gentle draws.
We rate the Lost Mary BM6000: a mesh coil, a 1000mAh battery and a liquid window so you can change the pod before it runs dry.
Mesh heats more evenly across its surface, which helps avoid hot spots. Every kit in this guide uses mesh.
No. Prefilled pods are designed to be replaced, not opened. If you want to refill, a refillable pod kit is the better choice.
Yes. They are rechargeable devices with replaceable pods. Single-use disposable vapes have been banned in the UK since 1 June 2025.
