10 Reasons Why You Should Make the Switch From Smoking to Vaping

Switching from smoking

Most people who make the switch from smoking to vaping do it for the money, then stay for everything else. Here are the ten reasons that come up most often behind the counter, and how to get started without wasting cash on the wrong kit.

Nic salt e-liquid bottle of the kind used by smokers switching to vaping

Only got a minute?
  • Vaping is the cheaper habit by a wide margin. A refillable kit plus e-liquid costs a fraction of a daily cigarette spend, even with the incoming duty factored in.
  • It is a switch, not a leap. Only around three to five people in every hundred stay off cigarettes going cold turkey. Vaping keeps the nicotine and the hand-to-mouth routine while dropping the smoke.
  • You control the nicotine. Strengths run from 20mg/ml down to 0mg, so you can choose the level that suits you.
  • Disposables are gone. Single-use vapes have been illegal to sell in the UK since 1 June 2025. The choice now is a refillable pod kit or a prefilled pod kit, and both are cheaper to run.
  • Start simple. One easy pod kit, one 20mg nic salt in a flavour you like, and spare coils or pods. That is the whole shopping list.

1. Quitting cold turkey is very hard for most people

Out of a hundred people quitting on willpower alone, roughly three to five are still off cigarettes six months later. That is not a character flaw. It is what the numbers look like when you remove nicotine, routine and hand-to-mouth habit in the same morning.

Switching to vaping removes the part that does the damage, the burning tobacco, and keeps the parts that make quitting hard. You still get nicotine, the ritual of stepping outside, and something to do with your hands. Once that has settled you can deal with the nicotine separately, at your own pace. Splitting one very hard change into two manageable ones is the whole idea, and it is why the NHS supports vaping as a stop-smoking route.

2. You will save a serious amount of money

This is the reason nearly everybody gives first, and it holds up best over a year. Cigarettes are bought again every day or two, forever. A vape kit is bought once and then refilled, and the refill is the only running cost. Even a heavy vaper going through a 10ml bottle every couple of days is spending a long way below a twenty-a-day habit.

The gap narrows slightly from 1 October 2026, when the Vaping Products Duty adds £2.20 per 10ml plus VAT to every bottle of e-liquid, nicotine or not, so £2.64 a bottle at the till. Stock held before that date can be sold at pre-duty prices until 31 March 2027. We have broken the numbers down in our guide to how much vape prices will go up under the new vape tax.

The saving is not only personal: switching also takes pressure off the NHS, which spends a substantial sum every year treating smoking-related illness.

3 and 4. It tastes better, and you control the nicotine

Cigarettes taste of one thing. E-liquid does not. The e-liquid range covers fruit, menthol, slush, dessert, sweets and drinks, and you can change whenever you get bored. That variety is what stops the switch feeling like a punishment.

If the idea of blueberry or bubblegum puts you off, there are tobacco-flavoured liquids made specifically for people who have just come off cigarettes. They will not taste identical, because nothing does, but they are familiar enough to bridge the first fortnight. Plenty of switchers start on tobacco, drift to menthol and end up on fruit within a couple of months.

The second half of this is strength. A cigarette delivers whatever it delivers, and you cannot buy a slightly weaker one. E-liquid is sold in graded strengths, from 20mg/ml, the UK legal maximum, down to 0mg, so you can match the strength to how much you smoked. 0mg liquid exists if you want the routine without the nicotine. Our guide to how much nicotine you should vape covers picking a starting strength honestly, which matters far more than picking a low one.

Heavy smoker
15 a day or more, first one within half an hour of waking. Start at 20mg/ml from the nic salt range in a pod kit. Going in too low is the most common reason a switch fails in week one.
Lighter or social smoker
Under 10 a day, or mostly evenings. 10mg nic salt usually covers it, and a 10ml bottle at 12mg freebase works well in a simple mouth-to-lung kit.

5 and 6. No lingering smell, and no second-hand smoke

Cigarette smoke is made of particles that settle into fabric and stay there. It is in your coat, your car seats, your hair and the curtains, and smokers are usually the last to notice it. Vapour is mostly water and glycerine, it disperses in seconds and it leaves no tar residue behind. This one tends to get reported back by other people rather than by the vaper: partners notice first, then colleagues.

Second-hand smoke is the other side of the same coin, and the reason smokers end up at the far end of a beer garden in the rain. Vapour is not the same thing, and there is no burning material smouldering away between puffs.

That does not make vaping welcome everywhere. Private premises set their own rules, many employers treat it exactly like smoking, and airlines are stricter still, so read can you vape on a plane before you travel. The rule of thumb: no smoking almost always means no vaping, and if you are unsure, ask.

7 and 8. Less waste, and no flame to drop

Cigarette butts are one of the most common pieces of litter in the country, and each one is a filter that does not break down quickly. A refillable vape kit is one device lasting months or years, with coils or pods as the only regular consumable.

Single-use disposables were a genuine problem on this front, which is a large part of why they were banned from sale in the UK on 1 June 2025. What replaced them is better on every measure: refillable pod kits you top up from a bottle, and prefilled pod kits where you swap a sealed pod into a rechargeable battery instead of binning the whole device. Read our guide to UK vape law and regulations for the detail on what is legal to buy now.

Fire is the other one. In England in 2022/23, accidental home fires started by smoking materials accounted for 35 per cent of all accidental fire fatalities, 65 deaths out of 185. A cigarette is a small burning object that people fall asleep holding.

A vape has no flame and nothing to drop. It has a battery, so sensible rules still apply: charge it with the supplied cable, do not leave it charging unattended overnight, do not carry loose cells in a pocket with keys or coins, and replace a swollen or damaged battery rather than nursing it along.

9. There is far more scope to customise your experience

Nobody ever tuned a cigarette. With vaping you choose the device, the draw, the power, the coil and the liquid, and change any of them until it feels right.

The first decision is inhale style. A tight mouth-to-lung draw is the one that feels like a cigarette: vapour into the mouth first, then inhale. Direct-to-lung is an open, airy draw with much more vapour that suits lower strengths. Almost every ex-smoker should start mouth-to-lung, and our guide to choosing a vape based on inhalation style explains why.

After that it is airflow rings, adjustable wattage and coil resistance. Coils around 1.0Ω to 1.2Ω give a tighter, warmer, cigarette-like draw at low power and sip liquid slowly. Coils below 0.8Ω give more vapour and flavour at the cost of battery life and e-liquid. You do not need any of this on day one, but it is there when you want it, and it is the reason people stay with vaping after the cigarettes have gone.

10. What the NHS says about vaping and smoking

The NHS says vaping is substantially less harmful than smoking, although it is not risk-free. The NHS also notes that e-cigarettes do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, two of the most harmful elements of tobacco smoke. Tobacco kills up to half of its long-term users, roughly 8 million people a year worldwide.

Vaping is not risk-free, and it is not for people who have never smoked. Nicotine is addictive whichever way it arrives. For advice on stopping smoking, speak to your GP, pharmacist or local NHS stop smoking service.

How to make the switch, step by step

The switch usually fails for practical reasons rather than motivational ones: the wrong strength, too complicated a device, or a flavour bought on a whim. This is the order we would do it in.

  1. 1
Pick a simple mouth-to-lung pod kit. Not a mod, not something with a screen and a menu. A small refillable pod kit charges by USB-C, fills from a bottle and does one thing well. Our best pod kits for beginners round-up is the shortlist.
  2. 2
Be honest about strength. If you smoke 15 or more a day, start at 20mg/ml nic salt. Under-dosing is the number one cause of going back to cigarettes in week one, and you can always come down later.
  3. 3
Buy two or three flavours, not one. A tobacco or menthol as the safe option and one fruit as the experiment. Flavour fatigue is real, and an alternative in the drawer stops a boring bottle turning into a trip to the corner shop.
  4. 4
Prime the coil and wait. Drip liquid onto the exposed cotton of a new coil or pod, fill it, then leave it five to ten minutes. Skipping this is how people burn a brand new coil and decide vaping tastes awful.
  5. 5
Change the way you inhale. A vape draw is slower and softer than a drag on a cigarette. Pull gently for three or four seconds. Hard, short drags flood the coil and give you a mouthful of liquid.
  6. 6
Keep spares in the house. A spare coil or pod and a spare bottle. A device that dies on a Sunday evening with no replacement is the most common route back to a packet of twenty.
  7. 7
Step the nicotine down when you are ready. Not in week one. Give the switch a month or two to become normal, then drop a level and hold there before dropping again.

Vaporesso Xros 3 Mini Pod Kit

The default recommendation for a new switcher. Pocket-sized, draw-activated so there is no button to remember, and the pods top-fill once you snap the mouthpiece off, without mess. The draw is tight enough to feel familiar to a smoker and forgiving if you are heavy-handed.

Battery: 1000mAh. Pod: 2ml refillable. Coils: 0.6Ω RDTL mesh included, 1.0Ω and 1.2Ω MTL pods available. Fit a 1.0Ω or 1.2Ω pod for 20mg nic salt; the 0.6Ω suits 10mg and below.

Aspire Gotek X Pod Kit

The simplest of the three and the easiest way into a proper refillable kit. Draw-activated, no settings at all, and the pod clicks straight in. Battery life is modest, so it suits someone near a charger most of the day, but it is very hard to get wrong.

Battery: 650mAh. Pod: 2ml refillable. Coil: 0.8Ω mesh. Best with 10mg to 20mg nic salt.

Smok Infinix Pod Vape Kit

A slim, light pen-style kit for anyone who wants the device to disappear into a pocket. The draw is tight and cigarette-like and there is nothing to adjust. The trade-off is a small battery and pod, so it works better as a lighter smoker’s device or a second kit.

Battery: 250mAh. Pod: 2ml refillable, two included. Micro USB charging. Best with 20mg nic salt.

If refilling from a bottle does not appeal at all, a prefilled pod kit is the closer replacement for the old disposable habit. The Lost Mary BM6000 prefilled pod kit pairs a rechargeable battery with sealed flavour pods you click in and out: no filling, no coil changing, just a pod swap. Our guide to buying a prefilled pod kit covers the compatibility points before you commit to a system. If none of these three suit, browse the wider starter kits and vape kits ranges.

Quick answers

I am not sure which vape to start with. Any recommendations for beginners?

A simple mouth-to-lung pod kit such as the Vaporesso Xros 3 Mini, the Aspire Gotek X or the Smok Infinix. All three are easy to use, need almost no maintenance and take nic salts at the strength most ex-smokers need.

Can I still buy disposable vapes in the UK?

No. Single-use disposable vapes have been illegal to sell in the UK since 1 June 2025. Refillable pod kits and prefilled pod kits are the legal replacements, and both work out cheaper to run.

What nicotine strength should I start on?

20mg/ml nic salt if you smoke 15 or more a day, 10mg if you smoke less than that. 20mg/ml is the UK legal maximum. Starting too low is the most common reason people give up on the switch in the first week.

Do I have to stop smoking completely on day one?

Everyone’s switch looks different. For advice on stopping smoking, speak to your GP, pharmacist or local NHS stop smoking service. What matters for the vape itself is that it is set up properly, so it satisfies you.

Will vaping cost more once the vape tax arrives?

E-liquid goes up by £2.20 per 10ml plus VAT from 1 October 2026, which is £2.64 a bottle. It is still far cheaper than smoking, and pre-duty stock can be sold until 31 March 2027.

Can I vape anywhere I could smoke?

Not automatically. Vaping is not covered by the smoking ban, but venues, employers and transport operators set their own rules, and airlines ban it in the cabin. Treat a no-smoking sign as a no-vaping sign unless told otherwise.

Kit availability, specifications and coil options reflect the range stocked at the time of writing and may change. Nothing here is medical advice; if you want structured support to stop smoking, speak to your GP or local stop smoking service. For adult smokers and vapers aged 18+ only.
